I set so=999 and that does not appear to make any difference. I use that setting to make the current cursor line remain at the middle of the screen when entering new text. As I understand it it, it causes vim to emulate a typewriter, so to speak, with the current line where text it entered remaining in the same physical location - eye level. So if I enter half a screen of blank lines, to make the ~'s disappear, and start entering some lengthy text, I don't see them again. But that would happen anyway, even with so=0. The only difference is that with so=0, the currently entered line of text soon finds itself to be at the bottom of the display, which especially with a laptop is not so good in terms of ergonomy.
