Not sure how that helps. I set so=999 and that does not appear to make 
any difference.

I use that setting to make the current cursor line remain at the middle 
of the screen when entering new text. As I understand it it, it causes 
vim to emulate a typewriter, so to speak, with the current line where 
text it entered remaining in the same physical location - eye level.

So if I enter half a screen of blank lines, to make the ~'s disappear, 
and start entering some lengthy text, I don't see them again. But that 
would happen anyway, even with so=0.

The only difference is that with so=0, the currently entered line of 
text soon finds itself to be at the bottom of the display, which 
especially with a laptop is not so good in terms of ergonomy.

What did I miss?
