For reasons unrelated, I just happened to be in an snippy mood.

:-/

I've thought about it a bit and the reason is as simple as "I just hate
the look of those tildes" - like some people hate cats, broccoli, or the
smell of cigars.. What else can I tell you..?

That's one obvious "solution" .. And within minutes, Gregory Margo
graciously came up with a patch that replaces the '~'s with ' 's.. And
I could easily modify it to display '-'s or '>'s or whatever instead.

Another "solution" that I sketched out earlier, namely changing the
highlight group's definition on the fly is the one I would favor, but I
haven't been able to figure out a way to access the current values of
cterm{fg|bg} and modify them "from the outside".

As for now, I'll stick to my clunky low-level "solution" where I make
the NonText highlight group invisible by default and switch to an almost
identical color scheme with just NonText redefined, whenever I need :set
list to make EOL's visible.

I apologize if I sounded a bit over the top, especially since you have
kindly responded to my requests for assistance in the past - next time
I'll make sure I stick in a slew of smiley's to make it clear I am not
saying such things in earnest.

Gen-Paul.
