Er, why does it bother _you_ that it should bother me?

Short answer:

It's called preferences. I prefer black socks and white underwear. Feel 
free to wear whatever you like.

Long(er) answer:

As I see it, the purpose of these tildes is to make the user aware of 
the possible presence of blank lines at the end of the buffer. Same as 
the dollar sign that reveals the eol character, thereby signaling the 
possible presence of trailing blanks or other non printable characters. 
I feel that they should only be available in ":set list" mode. I 
certainly do not need to be constantly reminded of where the file 
actually ends. As an example of a more rational reason why I do not like 
them, the font that I use is quite small and when I am entering text on 
line one of a buffer, the tilde on line two makes it more difficult to 
read what I have typed.

No offense meant, but I started this thread to discuss technical 
options, not the color of my underwear.
