Er, why does it bother _you_ that it should bother me? Short answer: It's called preferences. I prefer black socks and white underwear. Feel free to wear whatever you like. Long(er) answer: As I see it, the purpose of these tildes is to make the user aware of the possible presence of blank lines at the end of the buffer. Same as the dollar sign that reveals the eol character, thereby signaling the possible presence of trailing blanks or other non printable characters. I feel that they should only be available in ":set list" mode. I certainly do not need to be constantly reminded of where the file actually ends. As an example of a more rational reason why I do not like them, the font that I use is quite small and when I am entering text on line one of a buffer, the tilde on line two makes it more difficult to read what I have typed. No offense meant, but I started this thread to discuss technical options, not the color of my underwear.
