I have a feeling the "~" belongs somewhere in vim's reptilian past. I haven't seen anything in the manual that indicates that they can in any way be customized and with a program as flexible as vim, I found this rather surprising. Maybe this phobia of mine came to a head because I was working on the 256-color terminal color scheme to end them all and I felt that the presence of these tildes did not do my artistic talents justice :-) But honestly, I've never liked them, and maybe my feeling that the user should have the option to not visualize them is not totally irrational. The more I think about it, they visualize something that's not visible in the first place. Seeing where the buffer ends respective to my display is not something I need all the time, whether I am coding, documenting, or replying to an email. But I certainly do not advocate getting rid of them altogether. I'm not even asking that anything be done about this issue, for that matter. I just feel that visualizing where my buffer ends should be optional, same as EOL's. Even the way I use vim, which is likely far from optimal, there are times when it comes in handy.
