That's usually a minimum spec.  Using an adapter that puts out 900mA when
the device needs one amp will sometimes work OK and sometimes not.  Using
an adapter that can put out 2.8A will likely work just fine.

It's somewhat like the power supply in a IIfx or a Q950 - you have a PS in
there that will do well over 200 watts, but the devices connected to it
rarely need that much power.  However, if you tried to power a Q950 with
five drives using a supply from a IIsi, well, you'd have a nonfunctional
machine on your hands because the IIsi can't provide enough power.

Make sure the polarity on the adapter you plan to use matches the polarity
of the device.  If not, you will likely fry the device, although it may or
may not be a spectacular death.
