Depends. In general, this is true. However, installing a PDS card of the
same processor generation usually works (installing a faster '030 in an
'030, for example -- I use a Daystar 50MHz '030 in my IIci), and an '020
should be okay with an '030 upgrade card if you can find one. The only
real problems have been '030 -> '040 and of course with NetBSD/mac68k PPC
upgrades are right out.

This seems a little thick. The NetBSD world has excellent support and
many precompiled applications and packages. Why not make use of an old
system instead of getting another one? And what about Power Mac Unix?
In the case of the LC, it may be more trouble than it's worth but there are
*many* good reasons to be running Unix on a Mac. I think you're definitely
painting with a very broad brush.
