Thank you, Gregg. That's pretty much what I thought I was reading (except I wasn't aware of the OS versions involved). I'm starting to think the wisest course for this IIci is to max it out on RAM, play around with it a bit, and keep my eye out for a cheap Power Mac or G3 or 4.
