I asked a question similar to this in the Apple2 list.

First, and foremost, you need to find a ISP that offers a SHELL account.

Secondly, you'll need to find software to run the internet. I know AOL v1.0
used 5.25" disks, but AOL no longer supports the Apple IIe.

Good luck.

My personal advice is, you will probably be spending too much money to
upgrade your IIe. If you just want internet/email access, I would highly
recommend buying a WebTV. You can get the whole system for less than $100.
It runs at 150mhz and has a 56k modem. Nope, I am not affiliated with
WebTV...I just have several friends who use it.
