Actually, if you just want shell access, you don't need PPP, CSLIP or SLIP
access. If you dial into a UNIX computer, the UNIX machine connects to the
Internet over TCP/IP, and you connect to the UNIX machine over a normal
serial connection. You use a terminal program to use your local machine (in
this case, an Apple //e) as a terminal of the UNIX machine. No Internet
protocol needed (thus, no PPP or (C)SLIP, which are all protocols for
transporting IP packets over serial lines).
