Localtalk goes from serial port to serial port. That is, Printer Port to
Printer Port. However, unless I'm mistaken, the G4s don't have the
standard serial ports, so there is nowhere to plug it into the G4.

The only way to use AppleTalk between a Duo 230 and G4 is to get
Ethernet going on 230 and connect it that way. Depending on the docking
station you have, it may have it, or you may need an Ethernet Microdock
or even a SCSI-Ethernet adapter. Localtalk isn't going to happen,
however.

The phone port is going to be a 14.4 or 19.2 modem.

Subject: local talk from Powerbook Duo 230 to a G4 tower?

oh yes... not being satisfied with giving you all difficult problems to
solve with the LC III, it looks like i'm adopting another lovely piece
of beige from the office... ;-)

this time it's a powerbook Duo 230 (with docking station - first time
i've seen one of those!) - i've got a LocalTalk cable, and i need to
hook it up to transfer files to the office G4 desktop mac... on the
condition that i do that, i'll then be allowed to take home the Duo 230
for my collection ....

so please help!

all i need to know, is which port i connect the Local Talk cable to -
i've found the phone socket in the back of the Duo 230 - although i've
heard people use the printer socket for localtalk? and i need to know
where to connect it into the G4.... and what to do after then! bear in
mind this is the first time i've set up appletalk properly - before this
i have always used a linux machine to link the two....

thanks heaps

m
