1. You forgot to install OT PPP or another OT compatible dialer
2. You will need OT for a tcp/ip network connectin with OS X

You won't hear my say  'primitive'.
Appletalk didn't evolve much . Whatever works for system 6 works for 
system 7.x too. and vice versa.
