I must admit that I am not too happy about backward compatibility with OS X 10.2
built-in file sharing. This was not the case with previous versions eg 10.1.5. There
is nothing special about my 10.2 box apart from using SharePoints to sort out sharing
over AppleTalk.

In theory, System 7.1 with the usual enhancements will work with AppleShare 3.7.4, the
earliest AppleShare client to support IP. This combination is not supported by Apple
who recommend System 7.5.3 for AS/IP clients but it has worked fine with 7.1 in the
past. When copying files from my SE/30 to a 10.2 box, 90% of copies fail and the SE/30
hangs. The SE/30 has no problems copying files to a Windows AppleShare/IP server and I
have no reason to believe there is anything wrong with the SE/30 system setup.

AppleShare 3.8 includes support for non-Apple UAMs (User Authentication Mechanisms,
better known as long, encrypted passwords). Apple says that it requires System 7.6 but
I've run it quite happily on Macs using 7.5.3 and 7.5.5 in a production environment.

If I recall correctly, later versions of AppleShare really do require Mac OS 8.0 or
8.1 and tend to crash Macs running older systems.

I'll do a little more testing to see if my results are repeatable on a different Mac
but at the moment I'm a lot less optimistic about 10.2 compatibility than Marten.

Phil
