I greatly appreciate all the responses. I've reloaded a fresh install of system 7.1 (just the basic, original system, no upgrades, no OT) and am going to work my way up one element at a time. Interestingly, I'm back where I started with this problem, in that the osX machine is perfectly happy with this setup, and will connect and mount shared items, but the sys 7.1 machine, while it sees the eMac, gets a "the connection has unexpectedly been broken" error when attempting o connect. I'm going to try the Sharepoints software on the osX side next. I'm going to work through all various versions of the networking C.P.s and extensions on 7.1, keeping notes.
