Because the LCIII was the first LC Mac to support Apple multiscan monitors. I don't believe there is anything you can do to change it. The other resolution supported by the LC and LCII is 512x384, which comes from the 12" Apple color monitor. You get more colors but less resolution than with 640x480. I thought the IIci supported the fixed-resolution 16", but GURU says no.
