Unless you have a vram expansion you should really stick to monitors that support the old Mac Res(532x382 if I remember correctly) otherwise you will not get any better then 16colours.
Old Macs have a signal that reports there supported resolutions if this signal is not received your LC won't recognize the monitor. have you tried zapping the PRAM before putting a different monitor on it, Also make sure the monitor supports the resultions the LC supports.
