Going backward with Operating systems can be tricky, because when 7.6.1 is
installed it replaces the driver, and the new driver doesn't allow for an
earlier OS to run. I have worked around the problem with Power Macs, but I
have never tried it with something as old as this. What I do is this: I
start the machine with an external CD and my 8.6 installation CD (here is
the rub. Can this old computer startup with the 8.6 system?) I then erase
the HD, and replace the driver with the older 7.5.3 (then upgrade later to
7.5.5), and install that system. I then restart the system again with the
8.6 CD. This is the key! After the startup the system will rebuild the
desktop of Macintosh HD in such a way that it will work on the computer.

Anyway, that's how I do with with an old PowerMac or even some of my old 68K
machines, but I have never tried it with something as old as you are working
with. I hope this helps.
