It seems that there were 4 cases used for LC-form-factor boards:
original LC cases (with 2 floppy slots), the grooved type first used on
the LC II (similar to the LC case in look, but with only one floppy slot),
the manual-inject type with no groove on the front and the LC-type feet
(the best-known LC475 case), and the Q605 case that's similar in look to a
smaller Q/LC/P630 case without the CD-ROM and auxiliary controls.
They're the 4 I have too, yup.
Now, as far as which board was in which case from the factory, it
seems like the dual-floppy case was only used on the original LC, the
single-floppy grooved front was used on the LCII, LCIII, LCIII+, and
LC475, the manual-inject front was used on the LCII, LCIII, LCIII+, LC475,
and Q605, and the doubly-convex-front case with the "Quadra feet" was only
used on the Q605. Does this all look correct?
From my experience, I've not seen an LC475 in the single-floppy grooved front (or an LCIII+), nor a Q605 in anything but the bubbly convex feets case, otherwise everything else lines up :). Doesn't mean they don't exist, just that I haven't seen them! The only definites I can say are the ones I own - such as the LCII in the manual inject case that I photographed at http://www.danamania.com/temp/lc2-1.jpg and http://www.danamania.com/temp/lc2-2.jpg for mark. Otherwise everything else lines up with what I know.
Also, are Q605s much more rare in the Quadra-feet case than in the
LC475 case? I've never seen the former type anywhere but Dana's site, and
I've been looking for one "in the flesh" for a while. (No, that's not
meant as a shameless want-to-buy, but if anybody's willing to part with
one, feel free to contact me offlist. ;) ) Meanwhile, I swear I've run
across Q605s in the LC475 case before, although those weren't mentioned
earlier in this thread and I've no pictures to prove it.
They seem to be middling-rare here in the feets case, or if they're not people just don't want to part with them in the usual channels. on ebay and newsgroups I rarely see them, and indeed grabbed all 5 that came up in about a six month period on ebay australia :). What drew me to them initially was the rather poor quality photo of one on http://www.apple-history.com/frames/body.php?page=gallery&model=605 that looked JUST different enough from an LC475 to nab my attention. As I said above too - I've never seen an lc475 case labelled as a Q605... so to me they're rarer if they're around!.
Finally, and even more off-topic, does anybody know anything about the
convex/concave front originally intended for the LC/P630 (but not Q630)
that's mentioned in AppleDesign? (Yeah, I know this is getting pretty far
afield, and I'll gladly carry this into Quadlist instead, but it seemed
somewhat related to the conversation, so I thought I'd ask it here.)
Oh I love nattering about the cases. It's as interesting to me as any of the specs. How the little beasties look is part of the appeal to me; and in computers that are $10 to $15, I think I can afford to be concerned about what they look like :). I know nothing about the AppleDesign cases, as I don't have the book.
