Oh, I see what you mean. Could it possibly be that someone had put a real
Quadra 605 motherboard in that LCIII case?
I think they fit perfectly.
In any event, I was always under the impression that the "LCIII+"
designation stood for the 33MHz version of the standard 25MHz LCIII,
possibly only sold in Canada (?), and identical to the Performa 460, always
sold as a 33MHz machine.
I understand it's also possible to take a stock LCIII and by changing one
resistor or capacitor (can't remember exactly) you upgrade the speed to
33MHz anyway. I seem to remember that this was detailed on Low-End Mac
somewhere.
The separating factor is that these LC III + machines have the body of a
normal LC III but the front is rounded. It looks like the front of a Quadra
605 but not the top, back, bottom or sides.
The floppy opening is like the 605. Shaped differently and having the black
plastic door.
The badge only said LC III, but was like a badge on the Quadra 605, glued in
like badges you see on a 6100 or 7200/7300, etc.
Jeff, it's not related to the Quadra 605, it's related o the LC475. The Q605 and LC475 are similar looking but have different cases. The later curve fronted cases were introduced as far back as the original LCIII in some areas so can *not* be used to distinguish the LCIII+ from the LCIII as a result. Also I have seen an LC475 (originally from Saudi) that is *still* in the old flat fronted case, thus it may be that LCIII+s were produced in both flat front and curve fronted cases.
As for your friend with the 64MB chip in his 'LCIII+' he, or someone else, has swapped the board out for a LC475 board at some stage, the LCIII+ had a 68030 and it was soldered SMT type package.
To my knowledge no market released LC, LCII, LCIII or LCIII+ machines had socketed main CPUs, altho the LCII can be fitted with an FPU socket, and the LCIII and III+ do have FPU sockets.
See my extremely long (but informative!! ;-) ) post on the subject a few posts up the thread.
