Question 1: Who here owns a Mac Classic? I've heard that they have
dangerous CRT's inside them that can cause you problems once opened. Is
this correct, or am I way off? Apart from sitting on the shelf looking
like vintage equipment, what other uses can they have? 20 (40?)mb of
hard drive don't exactly make them server material!
I've attached a 200-some odd meg HD to mine with System 6 and a SCSI -> Ethernet adapter. With telnet and IRC, it makes a quite decent backup IRC box and console to my headless Linux omniserver (Well, formerly headless. Moved it to an old Stylistic tablet PC for the advantages of a built-in battery backup, but that's another story). Honestly, since moving to the new server, I haven't used my Classic much, but it's all ready to go should I need it :)
Considering I own a Powermac 8500/180, and a classic, I have a (25mhz?) Quadra 650 (pretty much in-between the previously mentioned machines) lying around collecting dust. Can anyone suggest some good uses for this machine? I believe I've got OS 8.1 installed on it - no modem (internal, maybe but I haven't checked in a while).
Lessee, old games, basic internet station, book reader... there's plenty it can do. If all else fails there's the ol' doorstop ;) Not sure what your area is like, but not too far around here there are plenty of lower class families that would love a computer of any variety, old Mac or not.
