I opened the CD drive case. Although it says "Glyph" on the outsinde, there is a Yamaha machine inside. In the back of the drive there are three pairs of jumper-type pins. The pair with the jumper reads "Parity"; the pairs w/o jumpers read "Terminator" and "Block Size". I have no idea whether or not the jumper is placed correctly.

I can't go to the machine level without knowing the Yamaha's model number.
It'a a "Yamaha CD-Rewritable Drive Model No. CRW6416S-NB"
I am reasonably sure that, if the Glyph is a truly Mac-useable device, and if it was last used on a Mac and NOT on a PC, the settings you will find on the Yamaha are the ones that make it interface properly to the Mac and need no changes.
Right. The thing is, I just remembered, some friend of mine took this drive to a technician once because I had it connected to an Akai sampler but the sampler didn't work properly. He thought the drive needed to have the jumpers changed to work with the sampler. When he returned the drive to me, he told me the guy changed the jumpers settings in the shop but put it back the way it was originally, before returning the drive to him. So I tested it. But I think I only ran Drive Setup and since it "saw" the drive, I thought it was OK and I probably have never inserted a CD since then.
The REAL issue lies in whether the CD driver (extension) makes the Mac "see" the device or if a cable, a missing external terminator or SCSI ID setting are the road blocks that keep the thing from working.
I have mentioned a couple of times in past messages that Drive Setup "sees" the drive. I assume that's what you mean by the Mac "seeing" the drive -- maybe I am wrong? If I am, what does it mean to see the drive? Anyway, three Macs have identified the drive yesterday through Drive Setup: the IIsi and 2 PowerMacs 6100. CDs inserted still dont show and Toast does not see the drive either, in all three Macs.
When used on a Mac other than a PPC running O.S. 9.2, my secret was the use of FWB CD ROM ToolKit extension along with the Apple CD Extensions that came with the O.S. sevenish system.
I have tried CD ROM Tool Kit Extension also to no avail. I don't remember if I used it along with tht Apple CD extention.
Thak you. Harold
