I replaced my Apple mice balls with ones from PC
mice. Most PC mice use rubber covered balls of steel,
which get better traction than Apple's flyweight
plastic balls.

The best cleaner I've found for the rubber covered
balls is Windex or other ammonia based glass cleaner.
Spritz some onto a folded paper towel then rub your
balls until they're clean. Rinse with water then
put back in the mouse. (It also gets the paper dust
"glaze" off printer rollers.)

If you think that's weird, what about golf? It's a
sport where guys spend all day hitting their balls
with metal rods then put them in holes in the ground...
