Settle a bet. I was telling a friend of mine, who started with macs when the Power Mac7100s came out, that the 840s were actually faster than the first Power Macs. Apple went the way of the PPC because they knew faster speeds were more attainable with the PPC architecture than with 68k, but those first attempts weren't quite there, as nice as they were.
What do you think Vintage Mac'ers?
Well the 840 certainly was faster running 68K programs. Even after a lot of programs were converted to PPC they tended to be slow. It wasn't until OS 8.5 or so that most of the OS was PPC code. a lot of times it wasn't so much whether it was running PPC or 68K but how much it switched between. Everytime the computer switches between executing 68K and PPC code it takes a performance hit. Depending on how the code is written, both in the application and the System it could switch back and forth often, really slowing things down.
A 7100 running OS 8.5 or later and using a purely PPC program should out perform an 840AV.
