Actually, your friend is wrong (so I guess you have won the bet). With the PowerPC chip, Apple basically had something like an RS6000 workstation. There is no way the Motorola 68040 can do the kind of real 3D rotation that is done on the graphics calculator (one of the freebies that come with the PowerPC Mac to show off the speed of the CPU). However, that said, those newer Macs do suck when it comes to running any of the older software written for the older Mac because it's running in emulation. Eventually, those apps got upgraded and the chip got faster and it became a non-issue, until OSX comes along and now all the OS9 and earlier software are running in emulation again.
