I think this is a fair comment. I think you have to look carefully at
the balance between the CPU speed, the availability, and bus speed, of
cache and main memory, also the video performance. Sometimes you can
effect a better improvement by upgrading something other than the CPU.
I have a Rev 1 350MHz B&W. Rather than a CPU upgrade I maxed the RAM to
1Gb (scavenged). Because the ATA bus is slow, I added a Sonnet SATA PCI
card and a 37Gb 10Krpm SATA drive. Those were expensive but not more
than a "super" CPU would have cost. They can also be passed on to the
next generation when the time comes. I then added a second B&W video
card and a second B&W monitor (used, cheap). I still use an older adb
keyboard and mouse :-)
From my point of view, I have lots of nice desktop space so I can read
multiple documents. I have a brand new hard drive for improved data
security. I'm running Jaguar, and Microsoft Office, so can exist in
both a windows and UNIX world. I don't play games, and if I did, I'd
probably be better off with my sons 3GHz PC :-)
I also have a 867MHz G4 12" powerbook. But when I'm not on the move I
prefer the twin screens of the B&W.
Of course I'd still love a G5 tower and a cinema display ;-)
