Dennis,

The card in the "longer, dark brown colored" slot is a cache card (used in the 
IIci and IIsi). I had problems similar to what you are describing which I 
(finally) traced to the cache card having gone South on me. I pulled the card 
and all was fine; put it back in and no boot. Pull the card and give it a try.

I never replaced my cache card because I got a new printer and was able to 
retire the IIci from its last role as a print server, but I've seen them on 
eBay, etc. for around $5.
