Phil,
I have a clear plastic filter with a stainless steel screen in it between the 
tank and the pump. Looks clean. I also have some kind of filter under the 
kitchen sink that does not have the guts in it so it should not cause flow 
problems. I guess I'm not sure what I'm looking for.
