Brian,The wire as you suspected is a ground.  It prevents arching between the
advance and breaker plate by allowing current to flow from one to the other
through the ground.  The wire is soldered to each plate with slack to allow the
advance to move without binding.  It is difficult to reattach, I did it once by
really heating the place and wire before applying the solder.  It seem to be
holding.Dan --- On Thu 03/15, < [EMAIL PROTECTED] > wrote:From:

got a single vacuum advance distributorwith a disconnected uninsulated wire
inside. The wire is attached to a square nut that accepts the screw that holds
the condenser to the outside of the distributor. I believe theother end of the
wire should attach to the breakerplate but I can't tell how it was originally
connected.
The breaker plate does not looklike it would accept solder. How do I
reattachthe wire? What is the reason for having this wire at all. I assume
it's a grounding
wire.Brian_______________________________________________vintagvw site [EMAIL
