Okay, after looking at the dizzy, you're right. My braided wire is soldered to
the plate as you said. I don't know what I was thinking.

Enrique,

The wires you mention are to connect the condenser to the breaker
points.
The male spade of the condenser wire goes through the hole in the bottom
of the distributor. The female connection from the breaker points
connects
to it. The wire I'm referring to is neither of these. It's actually a
braided
wire that is attached to a square nut on the inside casing of the
distributor.
This nut accepts the screw that holds the condenser on the outside of
the
distributor casing. My distributor is a 205M also. The braided wire
should be attached to the metal plate that the points are screwed to.
I'd be interested in a picture of the inside of your 205M if you have
a digital
camera. Send to [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Thanks,
Brian

I have a 205M that the other end of that wire has an female electrical
spade.
It is a dizzy that I haven't put in the car yet. There is a hole at
the bottom
of the dizzy for a wire that appears to come from the condenser. The
wire has a
plastic cover which lodges in that hole. The plastic cover has a male
spade on
it. I assumed those two spades go together.

Brian,The wire as you suspected is a ground. It prevents arching
between the
advance and breaker plate by allowing current to flow from one to the
other
through the ground. The wire is soldered to each plate with slack to
allow the
advance to move without binding. It is difficult to reattach, I did it
once by
really heating the place and wire before applying the solder. It seem
to be
holding.Dan --- On Thu 03/15, < [EMAIL PROTECTED] > wrote:From:

[vintagvw] Distributor repair neededHello all,I've got a single vacuum
advance
distributorwith a disconnected uninsulated wire inside. The wire is
attached to a
square nut that accepts the screw that holds the condenser to the
outside of the
distributor. I believe theother end of the wire should attach to the
breakerplate but I can't tell how it was originally connected.
The breaker plate does not looklike it would accept solder. How do I
reattachthe wire? What is the reason for having this wire at all. I
assume
it's a grounding
wire.Brian_______________________________________________vintagvw site
