Hi,

My 1979 fuel injected Super Beetle is equiped with an EGR Filter.

Does anyone know specifically what this filter is for? I'm not so much
interested in the EGR process itself, as I understand it's used to cut
down NOx emissions. I'm interested in the purpose of the filter.

Is it used solely to clean soot and particulates from the exhaust gases
before the air is recirculated back into the intake manifold so that the
junk doesn't damage the cylinders, heads, and pistons?

Or is the filter used to actually aid in cutting down emissions?

What's in the filter? Charcoal? Has anyone cut one open and cleaned an
old one out?

Thanks,
Tony
