165R15s had an aspect ratio of approximately 83. The
closest thing available in a modern-era tire is a
165/80-15, which is only slightly smaller in diameter
and a whole lot easier to find.

A 195/65-15 is about the same diameter, but doesn't
fit comfortably on a 4 or 4½" stock VW rim - IMO it
should only be used on a rim at least 5½" wide. If you
have a 4-lug Bug, 5½" rims aren't too hard to come by
(they were used on many special-edition cars in the
early `70s) but if you need the 5x205 bolt pattern
you'll have to resort to aftermarket rims (early
Porsche 5½" rims being too rare and dear).
