Actually, the swap is actually very simple (at least in the opposite direction that you described). I have a 1963 pan with a BJ front beam welded to it by the previous owner. The guy wasn't very VW-savvy so I'll never know if the swap was intentional or if it started out as a mistake that he decided to go ahead with. As it turned out, it was an absolutely *necessary* swap for me. The older K&L beams feature perfectly vertical shock towers where as the BJ beam towers angle outwards as they rise up. My application required a narrowed beam, and narrowing a K&L beam by much more than an inch requires drastic body work to tuck the towers further into the body.
