I try to stick with an OEM carburetor, if possible. Electronic ignition 
is a good idea from maintenance and efficiency standpoints.
I  put electronic ignition into every VW I build, since it helps mileage 
and eliminates checking the points - but I always carry a set of points, 
condenser, and tools to install them if the electronic ignition dies - 
as it has for me on at least two occasions.

Spare parts can be your best friends...
