My bug occasionally dies on me. Looses power, usually when
I shift into 4th. I can usually get it restarted, I wait a
minute or two.
It always starts up great, if I've shut if off on purpose.
I have an odd combination of a 1915cc engine with a
PICT-30, with an adapter. I know the carb is small, and it
needs help to idle when warm after the choke opens. The
heat risers are not connected at the moment.
Today, after it stalled the second time, at 60 mph, I got
where I was going by babying it, kept my speed under 60 and
accelerated rather slowly.
Someone had suggested my fuel was vaporizing in the fuel
line above the heat exchanger/exhaust so I moved it a bit,
as much as I could without re-routing the line altogether,
but this didn't help. One time, after stalling, I removed
the top of the carb and the float bowl was mostly empty, so
it wasn't getting enough gas.
I have a new fuel filter before the fuel pump, new-ish
mechanical pump. I was driving fairly reliably until the
last month or so. Could it be weather related, it has been
cold, but it starts just great. How can I check my fuel
pump, to eliminate that? my fuel tank is well sealed: Is
it supposed to have vent hoses to the charcoal cannister?
Could it be as simple as debris in my fuel tank causing
temporary blockages? Should I clean out my fuel tank?
(Obviously I would do this if I knew it would help, but I
don't want to only on a whim) Please provide some
diagnostic guidance.

Thanks,

Dean Johnson
