I agree,

I mostly abuse my bug but religiously change the engine oil (unfiltered) and
the air filter oil every 1000-2000 mi. I clean the air filter mesh with mineral
spirits, let drip drain for a few hours and fill the oil bath to just over the
red line. Every 3rd or 4th oil change I pull the sump screen and clean it out
too.

I use the cheapest decent oil I can find and for a while was getting red
container regular Exxon and silver container regular Mobile at Target for as
little as 59 cents/qt.

Now I'm using the Shell that Checker sells for $.79/qt with rebate couponds. I
mix with one qt of Marvel Mystery Oil (MMO) which is know to quiet the lifters,
super lube the internals and keep old engines going quite a few extra miles,
even years. I also add about 2 oz of MMO to every tank of gas to help lube my
leaded-gas valves and guides.

Peace,

Bob
