Subject: [vintagvw] Converting my 1974 Super to disc brakes

On April 2nd of 2007 (yes the year is correct), the parts showed up to allow
me to convert my 1974 Super Beetle to disc brakes. On Saturday May 31st,
2008 with the help of my fiance from Brisbane, Australia, I managed to put
the John Connolly super stopper rear brake shoes on Li'l Red and convert the
fronts to disc brakes. My dad also helped me install the master cylinder
and then using my little pressure bleeder, we bled the brakes. After a day
to test it all out, Enid (my fiance) and I took a 900 mile road trip from
Beatrice, NE to Enid, OK and then through the Kansas flint hillls from
Witchita to Kansas City, MO and back home again. We stopped in Kansas City
to pick up a Ham Radio antenna I had purchased from a craigslist seller.
The installation was very straight forward and I have great brakes now. The
only problem is that my stainless steel lines are a bit too short for the
fronts and I had to remove them from the brackets and use wire ties to
secure the the metal lines until I can get longer SS lines. I'm going to
check with aircooled.net to see what I can figure out but anyway, it's a
worthy conversion. It took me from 2pm to midnight to do it.

Here's the only photo Enid took of me while I was in a pissy mood
http://incolor.inebraska.com/elassley_bie//enidvisit/May31/IMG_0201.JPG
trying to get it all done.

Feel free to browse the rest of the photos and videos of our month of
hanging out.
