My wife and I want to restore a 1963 beetle I've had for years and so in
doing this retoration, we are going for function over form for a lot of
things. I've got a collection of old chrome bumpers to choose from and
we're not gonna get all fancy about year-correct items and so forth.

I want to try building a beetle that is low maintenance. I'm leaning toward
a stock 1600DP with fuel injection. I'm reading a lot about it and slowly
learning about what I need to do. I'm investigating hydraulic lifters,
rhino liner on the pan, full flow oiling, and host of other options to give
a 40+ year old car some modern anemnities. The whole idea is that we plan
to slowly, over time, convert to nothing but air-cooled VWs for our daily
transportation needs.

I'm wanting to do an IRS rear end, disc brakes all the way around with
ebrake cable, and still use the wide 5 rims. I'm going to use a ball joint
axle beam on the front. Is there any way to convert the beetle to IRS
suspension but still use the wide 5 bolt pattern with disc brakes? The
reason I want disc brakes is they are also - low maintenance. If I plan on
having a fleet of VWs to drive, I don't want to be under them all the time
doing all the maintenance. I want to lessen how much time I work on them
but ponying up the extra bucks now for the upgrades.

I guess the basic question is can you put wide 5 disc brakes on an IRS pan?
