Thanks for the replly Matt. My wife wants a beetle so bad. She grew up with one and really, her desire for a VW was a major factor in us getting married a couple of months ago. Her Dad is a VW mechanic and she wanted someone who was a lot like him but they are really hard to find. I'm really fortunate I guess.
Anyway, is your reason for the 1776 with the 30/31 so that you get the great low-end torque with tuneability? I'm still wanting to go FI. I know it's a bit more complicated but I've been wanting to take the plunge so I can build big displacement engines and not have to dork with carburetors. I'd love to build a bit old 2L engine and just run stock heads and manifold. I might lose velocity but it would just be a great "torkie" engine that would just be awesome for driving about anywhere. I've heard all kinds of naysaying about the hydro lifters. I was told they float valves at 3500 rpm but as long as they don't hurt the longevity of the engine and don't cause too much of a power loss, I'm okay with it. 3500 is rather low when the engine develops peak hp at 3800. Anything to just keep from having to get under the engine all the time. As far as going IRS with the wide 5, I think Thing drums are what people normally use because VW Things were exactly that...IRS with 5 lug drums. When you go back to 1963, people assume you are going to run the swing-axle setup. I don't care for swing-axle because I think they are prone to leaks. I don't have that problem with my IRS setups. The only thing I can come up with is to run IRS 4 lug rims with disc brakes and then run 4 to 5 wheel adapters if they make them. The offset would be horrendous I'm afraid and I don't like it. All the wide 5 disc brake conversions I find are for 66 and newer and have nothing to do with IRS. I'll have to keep researching and see what gives. My wife really digs the wide 5 rims with the moon caps. If they make a 4 lug rim that takes the moons, then I'd be set. I'll keep researching. Thanks Matt!
