Welcome back Chuck.  I'm still around - list is pretty dead but we're all 
busy living life.  Internet got old and we moved on I guess.

That sucks when that block breaks.  I've had good success with taking a tap 
and threading it down there.  It will leave some particles in the case, but 
is sure beats splitting the case.  Once you've tapped all the way down, you 
can attempt to pry up (like vise-grips and screw drivers - GULP) or attempt 
to thread a bolt down there and using some bushing, flat washers, and a hex 
nut, you can usually extract it out of there.  If it's in really tight, it 
might just crumble but the good news is that bakelite is softer than metal. 
I'd hate to run it through the engine, but if worse comes to worse, you were 
gonna have to tear it apart anyway right?  YMMV and wait and see what others 
have to say before you run out and try this.
