Bert et all,

The flat windshield Supers were a two year production run....1971 and
1972. VW changed model years on the First of August starting from somewhere in
the fifties, probably 1955. Please feel free to correct exact year.

Therefore a beetle built before or on the 31st of July of a year would
be the current year model and one built on the 1st of August would be the
following year model.

The curved windshield Supers, the 1303, debuted for the 73 year model on
1st August 1972.

As far as Suspension details are concerned, the 75 Supers had an
altogether different steering setup. The design of the Mac Pherson struts was
modified for the 1974 model year (that is on 1st August 1973) along with the
ball joints. Thus, between 1971-73 Supers and 74 and later supers, the struts
and Ball joints are different and not inter-changeable. I believe 75 and later
cars shared the same struts as 74s.

On another note, I was not aware that the 1303S and 1302S were not
available for the American market. I guess since the 'S' script denoted disc
front brakes, a 1600cc engine and other goodies, it made sense to market them
as a 'special' version in Euro and other regoins since the Americans enjoyed
disc brakes and 1600 engine as stock.

Best wishes and regards to all,

Asad
