You can also swap out the rear drums with all of the components of a Type 3
set-up (hubs, drums, backing plates, bearing retainers & seals, cylinders,
shoes, and hardware). Should increase the surface area by at least 50% if
memory serves. You still have to manually adjust your brakes, but you do
gain the ability to simply slip off the drums without having to remove the
nut.

But in this day and age, I would recommend just going with a 4-wheel disc
set-up. Zero adjustments required and even better braking capability, and
the kit prices have come down considerably compared to a decade ago. When
nearly everyone else on the road has ABS nowadays (along with all the
contributing factors attributing to today's bad drivers), you need all the
stopping power you can get.

NQ, a trick Bill may taught me was to put front wheel cylinders from a later
bug onto the back for added braking power. They are bigger than the stock
rear ones, so you gain some braking power there to match the new front disc
system. I did this with my lowered 70 standard bug. I just ordered front
wheel cylinders for my 70 bug, and they went right on the back without any
prob.
