Hello volks folks,

Hope all are doing well. Popped in with an issue that's been bothering me
for the past couple of days.....

I serviced the brakes on my dubs last Sunday with the help of a local old
timer VW mechanic whom I invited home. We were torquing up the rear axles when
we noticed that the big nut was a bit burred and the locking pin would not fit.
So I rummaged around my stash of VW bits and came up with a good used
replacement.

We put it on but the thread was a bit tight. We continued but had to use a
breaker bar to help turn after a few turns using just the socket wrench. It was
a bit stubborn and the thread seemed tight. I insisted that it did not look
good but the mech asked me to continue......I was doing the 'heavy' jobs as he
is old and frail. Anyway, once we torqued up the nut and put in the lock pin, I
noticed that the axle threads visible now were all shiny. They did not look
terribly cut but they shined good.

I wanted to back out the nut again and check but the mech insisted that all
was good and the old nut must have had dirty threads so the axle looked shiny.
I am not convinced now and having sleepless nights on this possibility,
thinking the worst......

Any way to know whether the threads are any good?? Short of taking the nut
off??

If the threads are bust......how do we go around replacing the rear axle?? It
is a difficult job? Car is a 72 1302 Super bug.

  Waiting for your input guys.

Best regards,

Asad
