Hello all,
I took a good look at the condition of the threads peeking out of the
axle nuts. Ran a thin pin down each side to assess the depth of the threads.
Concluded that the affected side is affected after all. The threads have been
cut and are half as deep as they should be.
So I went out looking for a replacement axle outer. Went to the local
VW hardcore 'secret' sources and got lucky. Picked up two axles in good
condition as one had a steel washer kinda thingy and one did not. Seller said
there were two kinds so I should take both to ensure I am not left stuck once I
dismantle the one off my bug. Threads on both are in good shape.
The seller also said it was not very hard to change the axles.....take
off the rear drum followed by the Allen head bolts holding the drive axles to
the outer axle and pull the axle out from under the car. Any other tips you
guys have??
