Alright gang, the link is now active so if you want to get Courtney's
original scan on the 34-PICT-3 adjustment procedure as well as the 4
individual pages where I corrected the upside down orientation, go get 'em.
On another note with the 009 - 34-PICT-3 combo, I battled it for years. I
went out one day to seriously start fixing the flat spot. I had bumped up
the accelerator pump output and now I was going to solder the hole over in
the throttle butterfly and drill out my jets. I suddenly stopped and asked
myself, "Why am I going to all this trouble to reduce my gas mileage?" I
purchased an SVDA distributor from John Connolly at ACVW.com and at that
time they were about $130. What a huge difference that made. Since the
SVDA is basically a 009 with vacuum advance added, the engine now can pull
in extra advance momentarily due to it having a feedback loop that tells the
distributor if the engine is under a load or not. So under hard
acceleration, the SVDA can pull up to 42 degrees if need be without causing
serious damage to the engine. The SVDA really excels at working with the
fuel supply issues of the 34-PICT-3. My mileage increased about 4 mpg and
setting the timing on it is a breeze! It's exactly the same procedure as
setting for the 009 - only you block off the vacuum port before revving it
up until max advance is reached and then picking some figure between 28 and
32 degrees and setting it. Hook up the vacuum line and you're done.
The engine idles so smooth, gets better mileage, has all kinds of torque and
so I finally understood how the 009 was best suited for industrial engines
where it is under a constant load all day long. The use of the 009 was
originally born out of frustration when replacement factory distributors
couldn't be found or were too expensive to buy. They worked better than a
non-functional distributor, but were a compromise at best.
I've seen some other sites selling the SVDA distributor for less money, and
I'm sure Chinese quality is the reason. I'm tempted to get a SUN
distributor machine so I could basically take an old factory distributor and
compare it to the advance curve of an SVDA and play around with it to make
it match. Then I could basically build my own SVDA. I think it's possible.
I'd have to find if I could buy replacement vacuum cannisters because the
innards either get hard or get holes in them. I'm sure the springs get weak
after time too.

I'm impressed as well!
Okay Courtney, I am uploading the file to my server. What I did is took
each page and printed it to another pdf where the rotation corrections are
made. The original file as you sent it to me is also included for those
that want the original file. Once they download it and unzip it, they can
decide what copies they wish to keep.

That's the humongous link to the the file. It won't be ready to download
until about 4:50 pm central time and should be just under 10 megs in
length. So everyone just give it another few minutes and make the
conversions based upon CST and then have at it. I'll leave it there for a
few days before I take it down.
