Yes, it's the tops of the heater boxes that hit the front seal lip.
It's only a slight hassle when installing or removing the engine. You
don't need to remove them to install the engine. Just a bit of extra
wiggling does the trick just fine. Some universal replacement boxes
also have the outboard levers for type 3 use, and it's best to cut those
off, as they really get in the way.

install the exhaust system while it is in the bug. Does anyone know
why it is or where it is exactly that causes a later model 1600 engine
to hang-up in the engine bay of pre-1600 engines?
