Once in awhile I do manage to enter a digit or two without using a
headset. If you can get a lull in the sound coming from your actual
phone call, you'll hear VoiceOver and can use the keypad to enter
numbers. But as others have said, if you have a lot of numbers to
enter, the headset is really the answer.
