Hi, Sendero's lookAround app tells you which direction you're facing, the nearest cross street, and the nearest POIs. You can shake it to update this info whenever you like. So it's great for basic orientation. I believe it costs around $5.
Navigon lets you plan pedestrian routes as well as driving ones. I haven't tried this, so I don't know how well it does. You can run Navigon and sendero's app at the same time, which is really nice because Navigon tells you where to turn, while LookAround helps you stay oriented. AroundMe lets you search for places by name or by category and can then pass the information to the built-in Maps app or to apps like Navigon so you can get directions to them. White and Yellow Pages does much the same thing and is free; AroundMe costs a couple of dollars if I remember right.
