Hi,
Think of Notification Center as "system tray" or "notification
area" on your computer. When you have only default programs,
weather could be the only one being active. To make this area
"come to life," it is often recommended to install or use apps
that use Internet connection such as Stocks, Weather, Mail,
social networking apps and so forth.
Cheers,
Joseph

Subject: What is the purpose of the Notification Center?
As a brand new iPhone user the Notification Center seems
superfluous. There
is an icon on my home screen if I want weather and so far that's
all I see
that it does. And I don't see anything about it in the excellent
NBP
"Getting Started" book. Thanks.
