The phone should let you update it without iTunes since you are on wifi. It may restart after the update. If you don't have iCloud set up, it may ask you to do that; I would do that so that your phone will back up to the cloud. Also you should be asked about installing the find my iPhone app which I would do in case the phone is lost.
