Yes I think so. The biggest advantage however is if you have multiple
sources of checking and reading your email. If you use imap for
everything, then your messages, new or old, replied to, or deleted are
always the same whether you are on your iDevice, on the web browser, or
on your email client.

No it won't. You will have to either enable imap on your account or set
Gmail up manually.
