I know I'm a bit late to the party on this topic but I just now got an
iPhone with Touch ID. I believe if I want to turn on Touch ID, iOS requires
me to also have a passcode as a backup mechanism. What I really want to use
Touch ID for is when getting new apps to be able to put my finger on the
home button and not have to type in my Apple ID password. What I don't want
to have to do is to type in my passcode or provide my fingerprint whenever
my screen locks and I want to start it again. So far, I've been unable to
figure out a setting that will let me use my Touch ID fingerprint to get
apps without also having to provide either my Touch ID fingerprint or
passcode when my phone locks.

Can someone tell me if what I want is possible and the steps to do so if it
is?

Thanks in advance.
